Car financing questions

Can I pay off my car loan sooner?

Usually, yes. Most car loans in Canada let you make extra payments or pay the whole balance early. In Ontario, the Consumer Protection Act generally lets you pay off the full balance of a credit agreement at any time without a prepayment penalty. Always confirm the terms in your loan agreement.

Paying early lowers the total interest you pay. Switching from monthly to bi-weekly payments also helps a little, because interest is calculated on a balance that drops more often.

Can I apply for a car loan directly with my bank?

Yes. You can get a car loan or line of credit from your own bank or credit union and pay for the car as a cash buyer. That works well if your bank offers you a strong rate.

When you apply through Car4Pro, one application goes to several lenders, so you can compare offers without visiting each bank yourself. Bring your bank's offer and we'll tell you honestly if we can beat it.

Does using this calculator affect my credit score?

No. The calculator doesn't collect any personal information or check your credit. A credit check only happens when you submit a finance application and give consent.

Why isn't the rate shown here guaranteed?

Your credit score is only part of the picture. Lenders set your rate after reviewing your full application: your credit utilization (how much of your available credit you use), your history with the bank, your income and existing debts, your residency and employment status, the down payment, the term, and the vehicle's condition, age and mileage. The rates on this page are typical ranges for each credit band, not offers. The only way to know your real rate is to apply.

Do lenders check TransUnion or Equifax?

Canada has two credit bureaus, Equifax and TransUnion. For car loans, most lenders usually pull your Equifax report. Some lenders use TransUnion or both.

Your score can differ between the two bureaus, so if you check your own score, look at your Equifax score for the closest picture of what an auto lender will see.

Should I choose monthly, bi-weekly or weekly payments?

Choose whatever lines up with your paycheque. Bi-weekly means 26 payments a year and weekly means 52. This calculator spreads the same yearly amount over each schedule, so the total interest is almost the same. You save a little with more frequent payments because the balance drops sooner.

How does a trade-in lower my sales tax?

In Ontario and most provinces, sales tax applies to the price of the car minus your trade-in value. For example, a $10,000 trade-in on a $30,000 car means you pay 13% HST on $20,000, which saves you $1,300.

What if I owe more on my trade-in than it's worth?

That's called negative equity. The difference is usually added to your new loan, which raises your payment and the interest you pay. Enter both your trade-in value and the amount you still owe, and the calculator will include it.

What are GAP insurance and an extended warranty?

GAP insurance covers the "gap" between what your insurer pays and what you still owe if the car is written off or stolen. It's most useful with a small down payment or a long term.

An extended warranty pays for covered mechanical repairs after the manufacturer's warranty ends. Both are optional. If you finance them, you also pay interest on them.

Can I get approved with bad credit, no credit or as a newcomer to Canada?

Often, yes. Some lenders specialize in rebuilding credit, first-time buyers and newcomers. The rate is usually higher at first, and a larger down payment can help. Apply here and a Car4Pro finance specialist will go over your options.

What's the longest term I can get?

Some lenders offer up to 96 months on newer vehicles. Older or higher-mileage cars often have shorter maximum terms. A longer term lowers each payment but increases the total interest. Try changing the term above to see the difference.

Disclaimer: This calculator is for estimates only and is not a loan offer or approval. Rates, terms and payments are not guaranteed until a lender approves your application. Your actual rate depends on your credit, income, the vehicle and lender criteria. Sales tax rates are general provincial rates and may differ for your situation.
